No Avatar required.

Well thanks to James Cameron we have yet another cinematic masterpiece called Avatar. The film was delicious to watch especially in 3D! I would have easily enjoyed another two hours. With the expense to go see a movie I’m highly selective with what I want to watch on the big screen and glad this one made the list and it was definitely well worth the money.

We visit an alien planet called Pandora in the year 2154; seems like such a long time from now and yet it felt all too familiar as the human race still carries big guns and pillages the land for resources. A peaceful tribal race called the Na’vi; nature worshippers who are unfortunately at the other end of our greedy lust for power and destruction, are the main inhabitants.

The whole time I couldn’t help feel the simple yet potent message this film was portraying; how disconnected we’ve become with our beautiful planet Earth and how the scarification continues with reckless abandon. The hardest part was thinking that for the majority of viewers this was nothing more than a Sci-Fi eye candy feast with cute blue aliens who live on a lush colorful planet with beauties that could be enjoyed right here between the “patches” of concrete, glass and steel. Planet Earth by the BBC Natural History Unit is a great way to rediscover what we’ve all forgotten in this rat race of consumerism.

I loved this film. Somewhere deep down it stirred a youthful hope within me that somehow we could enjoy our planet with the same wide-eyed wonderment and appreciation. Perhaps corporate greed and unethical business practices coupled with a different (puppet) government will do their due diligence? I guess for now we’ll have to continue with our self-serving demise and share it with our little plastic Na’vi (Made in China) in our McDonalds Happy Meals because this is what it’s all about after all isn’t it? What could be more environmentally savvy?

Thanks Mr. Cameron. I loved your movie and know your heart was in the right place. You had the guts to speak out but like most people who speak with any degree of sanity, it has to be buried under mounds of “comedic” dialogue or fancy CGI to be rebellious within the “democratic” confines. One day I hope humankind will wake up before the end and realize that in this beautiful planet that we call home there’s NO Avatar required.
